Reflections from FELASA 2025
Returning from the FELASA 2025 conference in Athens, we are left with a strong sense of motivation and community. The meeting brought together professionals from across Europe and beyond, all dedicated to improving the quality of animal research and the welfare of laboratory animals.
Throughout the sessions, workshops and informal discussions, one theme consistently stood out: quality in animal research goes far beyond compliance. It is closely linked to research culture, transparency and collaboration. Whether the topic was harm-benefit analysis, new approaches to home cage monitoring, or how institutions can support their teams more effectively, the underlying message was clear. Sustainable improvement requires shared responsibility and a mindset that puts scientific integrity and animal care on equal footing.

It was also a conference of connections. GoEQIPD members Vootele Voikar and Björn Gerlach were present and engaged in discussions around quality systems, certification and research culture. It was a pleasure to finally meet many colleagues in person, some for the first time, and to exchange experiences, ideas and practical insights. The value of face-to-face conversation remains unmatched, and FELASA once again provided the space to build trust, partnerships and momentum.
At GoEQIPD, we are proud to be part of this international movement toward higher standards and stronger collaboration. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting those who want to take the next step in improving research quality.
If you met us at the conference or would like to connect, we are always happy to continue the exchange.
